Tuning up early 70s Mercury outboard.....50 or 55hp?

I am trying to find out for buddy what year and he thinks its a 55hp. Carb needs adjustment or cleaner? We have to replace spark plugs etc. mod # is 557HG serial#4705............early 70s? BBBH

It's a little hard based on only parts of the number.<br /><br />Anyway, those days Merc did not have a 55, so..<br /><br />If you can't read the numbers, the coloring on the decals could tell the year.

Thanks for reply captain.......I thought it was a 50hp too....what would you suggest for carborator if it wasnt run in a while and would I be able to get the right spark plugs?

Spark plugs shouldn't be a problem. The carb issue is quite common.<br /><br />If you search these forums for 'carb clean' you'll get 236 hits.<br /><br />Most likely you're gonna get new gaskets, take carbs apart and clean them (taking creat care of all small parts, nozzles, bores etc.), put 'em together and make some final adjustments.<br /><br />A manual for it is highly recommendable (look top or bottom of this page).

Hi Captain, thanks again. I will let my buddy know about the sparks & carb. Your right about a manual, I used to have one for my merc on my champion bass boat. I told him he can pick up a manual for around 50 bucks. My buddy know thinks the motor might be in the late 60s. Thanks. "FISH"

Bigbass... that model number is for a 55 hp chrysler engine...not a merc...

If it turns out to be a late 60's Chrysler, watch your wallet... and don't leave home without your toolbox. Preferably stay within shouting distance of others.
