-- First, I have a 72 Evinrude 135 Starflite. It has not been run for almost a year. I am just got it off one of my friends. I am getting it ready for the water. I fired up and after a couple of attmepts it starts and will idle. The idle seem a little rough, and RPMS seem to vary a tad. When I got the motor he said that it needs a tuneup, I am just wondering what i can do, before taking it to the shop (CHANGE PLUGS etcc.??) Secondly anyone know how to change the LU gear oil. Eveytime i put oil in te top fill hole it comes right back out. THanks guys you guys are a lot of help! :D
p.s carb is new and clean not gummed up, and new water pump..... mechanic I talked to said that the water hose may not have casued enough back pressure?? :D
Hope it Floats

Your tune-up will involve new plugs, and points/condensers (under flywheel) Is your compression good and even on all cylinders? Good place to start diagnostics. For LU lube, remove top and bottom screws. Drain. Pump lube in bottom hole (dealers have a neat hand pump that makes the job a lot easier)until it flows from the top hole. Replace bottom and top screws, using NEW plastic washers. This will be a bit messy. :p I prefer to run engines in a barrel or trash can full of water. You will want to pick up a Seloc manual for your specific model. Lots of useful stuff in there!

The little pumps are like a liquid soap dispenser with a hose attached.

You can get one at most places that sell the lower unit oil. Walmart or Farm Supply. They cost $4.

Always fill from the bottom hole, the top hole is to allow the air to vent out while you fill it.

You buy a quart of lower unit oil and screw the pump onto it. Put the hose in the bottom hole and pump till full. Keep the hose in the bottom hole. Put the screw in the top hole. Now remove the hose and put in the bottom screw.

When you are done, wipe it off and put it in a Ziplock bag till next time you need it.

Back to the first post, could not having enough back pressure from the hose adapter cause a rough idle..in your opinion? Oh, how tight is the key for the prop supposed to be, mine is only like hand tight is that okay??
