Wow that amazing stuff, must have happened real quick otherwise there would be too much water in that boat for it to float again. I'm skeptical though about the authenticity of these photo. 1: I find it hard to believes a tug boat that size capable of pushing that size barge doesn't have enough power to back up against the current even at flood stage. Maybe the engine died at the bridge 2: There is no way that barge could have stop that close downstream from the bridge considering the strong current and weight of the barge. If they let go of the anchor from the moment it seperated from the tug, which would be very close to the bridge otherwise, the barge would be stuck against the bridge. It would take a long distance for the anchor to stop that barge. My late father owned and operated a tug boat on tidal rivers system. About half way into the low tide period, the current going toward the ocean is extremely strong. We were always able to go against it, can't go very fast but did moved.

gonefishie, he had got to the low water side and cut the tow loose because this is a draw bridge and I think just one side had came up, so he cut the tow loose and was planning on backing up and going to the raised side to pass through but never got to because some of the rigging did not get loose from the tow and it hung him up in the bridge.

OK, that explained it, once he got turned sideway there wasn't anything he can do. I've seen a manuever like that once in the movie The Perfect Storm.
