First a little history..

My father has always had a 14' Lund (red & silver) with a 15 hp Johson and loved to take his father along with myself and brother fishing. As we got older, moved away and his father passing, he bought a 1999 Lund Pro V 1900 with a Merc Optimax 150 with all the bells and whistles. I was puzzled with his new purchase because to him a computer was his hand held calculator (old school) and the boat was way too much for him to handle. So I would pilot the boat for him and take him fishing showing him how to operate any and all the equipment on his boat at a pace he could manage.

Now the incident.

I would back the boat up to the landing and tie a long rope between the dock and cleat on the boat. I would then back-up sort of quick and the boat would roll off into the lake and the rope would keep it at the dock. Every time I did this my father was amazed at how well it worked.

He and his neighbor went fishing and he tried my method of putting his boat into the water.....unsuccessful. The boat only rolled halfway off the trialer and he started to drive the pick-up and trailer away to park thinking the boat was in the water. The boat finally ended up rolling the rest of the way off the trailer in the middle of boat landing on the concrete. The weight of the motor crushed the rear transom, luckely I guess, his trailer has a power winch and they were able to winch it back up onto the trailer. He told me my method of landing his boat sucked and that I had to go pick the boat up from being repair at Lund, his insurance covered the damage.

To this day he launches his boat the old fashioned way.

I launch like you do with my 18 ft'r & had never had a problem with it. You may want to tackfully remind him that "most vehicles" have side view mirrors. I always look in mine to make sure the boat is floating before I pull out.

We all have different levels of skills, if the other system works best for him then that is probably the way to go for him. Next time you are around and if he is willing why dont you let him launch the boat so you can give him some pointers on your technique. There might be something he is missing....
I use the same method for most of the time. I can tell you there have been quite a few times that the boat will not slide off the trailer. I just repeat the process but dont pull all the way out of course. Also, I have found that it works best when the carpet on the trailer is wet. I noticed that when we do a full weekend of boating and we take out late at night and put it early in the morning...

He failed to pay attention to what he was doing. I have abused your technique numerous times to launch a 24' cabin cruiser solo.
