trying to install a pre-owned PTT to a1996 Johnson 50

My manual tilt assist unit broke, and I found a second hand power tilt/trim unit online. My engine is a BJ50 BELEDS. The PTT is shown in the picture . Blue wire, green wire, black (earth wire). Is that classed as a 3 wire? Before I try to connect to the engine, how do I test the motor directly from a battery. (i've seen it work before, but can't remember which wires to touch to the battery leads). If it goes O.K. then I'll get help to connect it up. I don't see any relays on the engine. I do see an unused 3-wire harness and connector (blue, green and white wires). Can you direct me? I may go to a mechanic if things sound complicated.

Touch blue to positive and green to negative to test for up.-----You will need the relays and wiring for it.---Do you have a switch on the control lever ?-----Wiring and 12 volts has proven to be an issue for some.----A shop will cost many beer tokens.

Depending on your ease of working electrical circuits......

see drawing for T&T with 3 wires ...typical hook-up picture a bit fuzzy but should be adequate for McGiver hook-up :)

in typical 2 wire T&T battery reversals on blue green will reverse up and down See 2 wire t&T) pic.


in a 3 wire T&T with ground common for blue or green....... try power to blue and ground then green and ground for up and down movements.

if it works then the fancy flip-flop arrangement typical of 2 wire systems need not be a concern if you simply drive the 2 seperate relays individually to power their respective color (blue and green with the battery supply. Ground being common for both functions.
