Ok Starcraft gurus.. I posted a few things in the spring and I am still looking for an Islander or a Mariner, leaning more for an Islander. I have found a few but I am looking for a real good deal. I have plenty of patience to find what I want. Figured fall would be a good time to find a deal on one. I have looked a quite a few of these big tins and have to say they are a little intimidating condisering a 22ft bassboat and a 22ft big tin are not that comparible. I am a little concerned on an I/O setup just due to the fact I have never owned one. I have found a 1989 that has had a lot of mechanical things done but needs a new transom. I have no issues with doing this myself after reading countless hours on here. Does anyone have any idea what kind of money I would be investing in a new transom doing it the correct way. Floor is solid all over and a very clean boat with fish finder and GPS setup and decent tandem axle trailer. No canvas just a full cover.
Also is the Ford 2.3L OMC Cobra outdrive a decent setup?
Any ball park figures you would offer on a rig like this.

Really want to find one to go through this winter for spring on Erie
Thanks all
Chad.

I did a quick quick search on the lower end listings in Michigan. You didn't say the cost of the one your looking at, so we don't know your budget.

I'm not an Islander expert, but I think all of them are i/o's. Mariners would be OB's

Your right that now is the time for deals, good luck finding the one for you.

Re: OMC COBRA

Stay away!
While the Cobra is a better set up, OMC has been belly up for over 20 years.
Go Outboard (Evinrude, Johnson, Yammy, suzuki) or Mercruiser or Volvo Penta (rare in a SC) only for an I/O

Yah, the Islander does actually come in an outboard version but they are quite rare. Give us a heads up on what kind of budget you are working with and we should be able to tell you what you can buy at that price point.

Enjoy the hunt!

Re: Trying to find a Islander in Mich/IN/Oh area..

doing new transom correctly can be <$100 depending on what you pay for marine ply. plywood, epoxy, rivets is all. $150 tops. IF you do it yourself...

i like I/Os but think you'd be smart to stick with an OB unless you find a good condition, CURRENTLY RUNNING and able to be tested I/O. remember that an I/O boat is only a transom skin(easily done when you have the wood part out already) and a pod away from being able to mount an OB. you also gain 2'+ of effective boat length this way. i think this option will become more and more popular as the # of good used 4stroke and EFI-2stroke OBs goes up and their prices come down

Re: Trying to find a Islander in Mich/IN/Oh area..

Thanks for the replies everyone. My price depends on what I am getting in the package so to speek. I have found an mid seventies Islander it has a mercruiser and the iron duke but it needs some tlc. I would have to haul home on flat bed. It has set for 10 plus years.. They want 1500 for it. If I can get it for under 1000 will probably bring it home and do a total rebuild. I prefer to stick to an outboard but I do like the islanders for some reason.. What is this boat?

Thinking of contacting the owner if he still has it.. Im basically wanting a big tin for lake erie fishing walleye and smallmouth. My back just cant take the bass boat rides anymore.
Thanks again,
Chad

Looks like a Holiday to me. 20 ft is mostly all useable as you cn store a lot under the splash well . As well under the bow I use the semi large plastic bis ( clear ) with tight lids. and rods will fir under the bow also. I have a 22 ft Holiday and love it. Also with a OB

Been on Erie on newer SFM and Fishmaster models. Best to add an air-ride because the bigger tins will still beat you up

Re: Trying to find a Islander in Mich/IN/Oh area..

Well in the $1000 to $1500 range you should expect to find a hull in good shape, trailer in reasonable shape, engine that may need to be caught up on maintenance or close to runable (not blown/cracked). But, you should anticipate pretty much a total rebuild for the rest (deck, transom, seats, paint, trailer tires, all that biz).

Any less than that you should anticipate taking the driveline out of the mix.

Any more than that and things get a little tricky as to what you are paying for. The $2k - $5k range is challenging to shop as you have good, turn key, water ready boats mixed in with ones that look pretty good, yet need a total overhaul.

Here is a 1992 22' hardtop with a 4.3 that has had the price lowered to $5900. Its been for sale for a bit and I'm sure it could be had for much lower. I dont know what the deal is on this one, it has michigan reg on it and is for sale in Tecumseh, which is about 20 minutes from the bridge on the Canadian side. http://windsor.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...d-merc-cuddy-cabin-hardtop-W0QQAdIdZ321529342

If your interested let me know and I would be happy to check it out and take some better pics.
Good Luck!....Dan

Thanks everyone.. I looked at a few boats this past weekend and learned to ask one simple question.. What year was the picks you posted on craigslist.. I was pretty disappointed in what I seen for the price they were asking.. I am trying to get info on an 88 islander that just showed not to far from me a little more than I want to spend but its a hardtop as well. Cant hurt to look... The saga continues..

One other question? For you hardtop owners how do they tow? I imagine its like a big sail??

Yes it is going to catch a lot of air. Your not going to get the greatest mileage because of that while towing. You should be able to tow it with a small suv/pickup truck, but I have a 3/4 ton truck and a 1/2 ton suburban so I dont know how it would behave behind something smaller. The hard top is nice because it gives you so many places to mount lights, planer board reels, rocket launcher, protection from rain and sun, also protection from spray on windy days. There are three things that I can complain about the hard top, 1 It gets really hot under the top when there isn't a breeze and its sunny out. 2 the windshield gets foggy on the inside in the mornings and its hard to see, but if you get a 12 volt fan and blow it on the windshield it does help but its still not perfect. 3 If your taller than 5' 11" your going to hit your head on the top in the back of the boat. Other than that its a great boat and I would get another one if I had to repalce this one.

Re: Trying to find a Islander in Mich/IN/Oh area..

What is the difference between the islander and a Sylvan Great lakes or offshore. They look like they area a thinner sided boat so to speak.. Are they a good boat? like the below links
http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/2669539697.html
http://limaohio.craigslist.org/boa/2613258683.html

Well, as you can see, they sure look like the Islander don't they, nice rigs! There is some heritage there.

I think those are both very fair deals so long as the engine checks, transom checks, and the deck checks.

Sylvan was started by one of the same family who start Starcraft. Hulls are nearly identical. We'll still let you in the club :)
