maybe they were on all 4 tires and one came off? or maybe they were in the middle of installing the full set?
just a thought. you do get the best braking, steering and traction performance with them on all 4 wheels particularly a car like a Mustang.
Funny pic though.

old timer chain deal was to install chain one set on right rear of drive axle. Install remaining chain set on left front. Ya can steer and go too. Maybe thats what this is. Can't tell from photo.

Bomar's avatar scared Mrs. QC away . . .

Anyway, we see that all the time in the So Cal mountains with the chains. Usually Cadillac's the other way . . .

Re: Try and spot what's wrong with this picture...

just to clear up my post..say ya gots two tire chains......ya puts one on a rear drive wheel, the other on a front wheel. Spose if ya gots front wheel drive ya could do the same with equal results.

BTW, this year I installed the chains on my 2x4 F150 while back in the woods deer hunting. I have a quarter mile fire road I use to get back in. I get real paranoid about the weather turning and not getting out.

pjc,
That sounds like a good principle, however with limited slip drive axles it wouldn't work. Once the other tire started spinning, you still wouldn't go anywhere.
Sorta like my ATV when in 4X4, I actually only have 4X3. Once one front wheel starts spinning, the other one quits driving.
You are correct though that chains on both axles are a good idea. You can't go anywhere if you can't steer.

Honestly,
I don't see the need for chains where they are unless they are headed for worse conditions. Chains work great on packed snow and/or ice. They don't work so good on pavement, even slushy pavement.

AK Chappy

The picture above looks like a typical chain-up scene in our local mountains. The Highway Patrol will setup the chain "station" just below where you need it. For us it is about altitude, so around the corner and up a little higher may be 100% covered . . .

Re: Try and spot what's wrong with this picture...

I know what you mean there QC. I used to go up to Big Bear for skiing. I guess the big difference is the fact that I (and others) grew up with our parents, friends, family driving in icy, snowy weather. Some of us got our first driving experience in that kind of stuff.
If all you ever drive on is pavement, be it wet or dry, you don't understand what happens when it snows.
I guess, I also inferred that the pic had come from the great state of OH. I could be wrong, but I will never admit it :D :D j/k
Long story short, good point QC.

AK Chappy
