Truly dumb exhaust question

Ahoy. I am new to the boating world so please excuse my ignorance. I have two questions about my exhaust system. The motor is a chevy 350 and has exhaust manifold with risers. On the boat there is a coupling and then a "t" fitting with a flapper inside. First question, what is that part called.( the "t") It has a flapper inside and some sort of electric control on the outside to operate the flapper ??? How is this wired up? What controls the flapper and why ? I never saw motor in boat so I'm not sure how to put it back together. Thank you

Sounds like an exhaust diverter for a "silent choice" or "captain's call" exhaust. Post picks

Also I would like to know what the "t" is for. After the t , the exhaust can go out the side of the boat or it looks like it goes out the transom somehow. I would like to have a better understanding of the system. Thank you

Re: Truly dumb exhaust question

When it's closed you get exhaust through the center of your prop, which is quiet and hydrodynamically efficient for takeoffs. The exhaust helps you get out of the hole by causing a bit of prop slip to let the motor get spinning.
When you open the exhaust through the boat's transom you get more sound and the motor can rev higher due to lessened exhaust restriction. I's really loud, to the point that many folks are annoyed. I like it, but in smaller doses.

Also the "T" you are refuring too is called the Y pipe.

Goggle Silent choice boat exhaust systems....that will get you an idea how it works. You have a very nice.... expensive exhaust system on your boat.

Good Luck with your new ride!
