2005 merc 6.2mpi in a 1999 searay 270.

Symptom occurs switched to either battery, both fully charged, water levels maintained, 1 season on them - don't think it is them because the issue is consistent all the time.

Turn ignition key to on. There is about a 1 second pause, a solid beep, and guage needles move to normal running positions (fuel, voltage, etc.)
Turn key to start - click from engine compartment, all guages pin to the extreme left like there is a short of some kind - nothing happens.
Turn key to start again .. hold it in start position .. after about two seconds the starter kicks in (strongly, no sounds of struggling to crank or anything) and engine starts.

Where do I start looking?

Thanks!

might be a bad ground. check battery cables at BOTH ENDS, especially at the neg block connection. Then check the cannon plug(main harness plug on engine)
for looseness, corrosion, pull apart, apply grease, and clamp
