I recently bought a boat with a 1987 Force 85 HP.
The pistons got stuck over the winter. I freed them up with mystey oil. The motor will not start I have cleaned the carbs, replaced the water pump, put in new plugs. I have a good spark. The plugs are dry after cranking. Compression readings 125,35,75. Any help would be appreciated. This is the first motor I have ever owned . I have called a couple of boat repair shops and they told me to junk it. They said it is one of the worst motors built. I think it looks nice.
Can I replace the pistons and not have to dismantle the entire power head?

Re: Troubles

Howdy, RBwoon.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The engine is junk. You can turn it back into a useful tool for about the price of a good used JohnnyRude or Merc.

My advice is to get the JohnnyRude and sell the junk on eBay for parts.

Re: Troubles

Sounds like the engine is "waisted", if you are going to "part it out" please contact me at john@johndperry.com , I need some engine pieces for spares for my 1986 85HP unit if they will fit.

Re: Troubles

I know this post is a couple of weeks old, but it may be just a head gasket. I would at least pull the head and check the gasket.

Good luck

Re: Troubles

Darn people get off the Force is a BAD engine kick.
Dry plugs means no gas shheesh.
Make sure you are pumpin up the bulb.
Did you open the vent on the fuel tank?
Next thing is to make sure you repair the fuel pump. Easy thing on these BAD force motors and yes part are availble from N.A.P.A. Auto parts stores. about 10.00 I think.
Or better yet
HERE.
Did you open the mixture screws about 1 turn from a light seat?

Had the same thing in a motor I took to lake, worked fine at home but at lake had dry plugs. Turned out I did not pump up the fuel bulb enough.
The gas tank I used on land was on floor and the boats tank is under the floor. :)
And yes it was on a hose on Land.

Re: Troubles

compressions seem off , but if its anything like my 150 you can replace pistons and rings without removing powerhead . although after all the grief i had with mine i wish i had made the engineer(yeah rite) remove it in the 1st place .

Re: Troubles

Er realgun. Original thread says compression numbers are 125,35,75. Working on the fuel system is not going to bring those numbers back up. Hopefully it is just the head gasket as novicetech states.

Sorry was late. You are correct he is low on 2 and middling on 3. However he is still with a no fuel issue to boot.

Well could be head gasket or worse. Maybe a rebuild or a newer better (not IMHO) motor. The real issue I see with the force was its ratings were low. Price was low so a lot of inexperienced people bought them and did not maintain them. I seen a few that were run straight gas then siezed and then sold as no good. Well any engine that was recomended to mix gas and oil will do that.
I don't see that much more maintanece than on other engines. And to mee seems to be simpler.

>>>me>>>climbs down from high horse to go boating in my rebuilt Bayliner with 85Hp Force. :)
