I have a 1978 stardeck and had a mechanic put on an outrive that they bought because mine was stolen. The outdrive will not shift out of fwd and it steers the opposite direction. I took the outdrive off and pulled on the cables and it still doesnt shift..any ideas or suggestions to these annoying problems would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard Cody.

Did the mechanic replace your drive because it was stolen while they had it, or did they locate a drive for you after it was stolen somewhere else?

I don't know the mechanical shifts well enough to answer your shift question. But you're sure they replaced the drive with the same drive and exact same shift? '78 would be a hydro-mechanical shift, '77 would have been an electric shift (totally different) and by '80 (I think) you'd be in a true mechanical shift.

Also, the steering on a Stringer drive is one of two types (again, I think): Tru-Course and through-the-transom push rod type. If it's Tru-Course, there's kinda' only one way to connect that up, so if it's backwards they've done the install wrong. Did you replace the helm and cable too, or just the drive?

The outdrive was stolen becuz they left it outside just laying on the side of the building..n as far as I know its the same 78 cable shift is the same...it has two cables a long cable n a short cable...n as far as the steering goes all I know is that the cable spins a gear on the transom which then spins a gear on the outdrive...but wats got me puzzeled the most is with the outdrive completly off u should be able to pull the cables one way or another but they dont budge at all

So with the current outdrive off, does the helm and the gear turn freely?

I'm afraid I don't know enough about your shift system to be of much help. One of the other guys will have to chime in on that.

Let's back the train up here just a second ... Did the boat work (shift and steering) before you took it to the shop? Then all these problems cropped up after you got the new drive?

Or have you never had it working before?

If you disconnect the steering cable from the drive: does the drive turn freely on the swivel by hand? (I'm wondering if it ain't yer' drive, but rather yer' cable.)

The best way to load images is to put an account on Photobucket, Flickr or something like that and then link the image code into your thread. The forum is struggling with uploads since they upgraded it. They're working on the fix, but it's still not working quite right.
