I can't figure this out:confused:

Got everything wired up, new LED trailer tail lights work great - brake, running lights, blinkers, all good.

Then I go to add these LED clearance lights...

Snap them in place, hook up the single black wire to the brown running light wire, turn on the lights and - tail lights on the trailer, I get nothing. Truck tail lights go very dim.

I keep thinking this can't be this complex. Man I am a big dumb head:facepalm:

What am I doing wrong here?

Looks like your power wire is attached to the ground.

my guess is ground issue you have a short some where beween your trailer tail lights and the plug. with my expierence wiring trailers and some boats useually the ground is your vehical, then that black wire i see should be white for running lights. on my trailer i have a single white wire going to the light and a bolt going threw the trailer makeing it grounded.

Re: Trouble wireing clearance lights?

Glad it's working for you, but thought I might mention an FYI.

Brown is the proper color for side marker feed.
White is the proper color for trailer ground.
Black is not properly used in trailer wiring.
Green is RH Turn/Stop.
Yellow is LH Turn/Stop.
Blue is for Electric Brakes if you have them.

And ever trusting the function of a wire by its color is just plain silly.

on a trailer black is usually a 12v constant ( as long as the vehicle is wired) to power lights winches and your electric brake back up battery

Re: Trouble wireing clearance lights?

Yah, this truck had all sorts of wiring issues when I first bought it. Took a fella 2.5 days to get it all straightened out, and a fat check:facepalm:

Well, black is what they gave me for the clearance lights so that is what I hooked up anyway.

Thanks a bunch guys and have a good one!:)

Explaining to someone how it SHOULD be wired is not silly. Assuming anything is.

You are right of course. I don't usually go higher than 4 pin connectors, and when I do, I run the 12v buss on red.
