trouble starting

I have had some problems starting my I/O mercruzer. Seems when I turn the starter over if it doesn't start right up at first turn it just whines away- nothing. Then I hit it again. Seems like the extra juice from right when the key turns is what it needs to start. If it doesn't start then it won't. Sound familair to anyone? Do I need a better battery or should I look at installing a capacitor of some type for extra kick? My battery is fairly new but Idon't remember the same problem with my older one.

A year would be helpful....
Or better yet is it efi or carb?
If it is a carb, try pumping twice, put the throttle at 1/4 or so....
Does that help?......
I would also have a look at the connections at the battery, starter & where the ground at the block.......​

1) Are you saying that the Starter Alone Whines Away,.....
Or,........
2) The Motor continues to turn over,+ Doesn't Start,..??..??....

If it's #1,...... You need a New Starter..........
