Trouble Starting - Neutral does the trick, sometimes...

Lately, my 77' Regal Cuddy Cabin (21') has been having trouble starting. It sounds like it wants to start but it won't turn over and usually takes about 10-20 attempts for me to get it started. I usually have to put it in neutral and push the throttle down in order to get it started.

Sometimes when it does start the engine shakes really bad (this has happened 3 times in the last 20 or so starts.) But most of the time after it's started it will run perfect, until it is shut down again (which is a HUGE pain when I'm trying to fish) Then again, some days it starts up perfectly each time. I'm assuming my starter is going up, then again it could be the battery or connections.

When I put the key in the ignition all of the gauges work, and the blower/trim/bilge work as well.

The boat is set up for two batteries but this year I've been running it on one battery, not sure if that would make a difference - also I haven't charged this battery since last year - I wonder if it just needs a charge?

Either way, does this sound like something minor or major? Or has anyone else experienced this type of problem? The engine was bought back in 2006 I believe and only has 30 or so hours on it... its a 4 cylinder 130HP mercruiser.
