My Evinrude outboard did not want to start today. I pumped the bulb full of gas, had a good charge on my battery but it would just turn over. I was getting good spark. Finally, I took the plate off the 3 carburators and put my hand over 2 of the carb ports(had my wife turn the key) and lo-and-behold, she fired off. After running around on the lake for a while it would crank up on the first turn of the key. What kind of problem does this sound like? Thanks

Did you push in on the key primer while cranking on initial startup to inject fuel into the intake chamber?

I did. I held it in about 8-10 seconds and then turned the key. I had a sheen if gas in the water around the motor, so I know it was getting gas. I even tried the red lever (manual choke) but no crank till I held my hand over the carb ports. weird huh?

Very wierd considering that the carb flaps should be closed with the controls in neutral. And with a gas sheen on the water you would think it was flooding in which case more air would help to clear it.You didn't have the fast idle on the controls advanced did you.I believe that engine has a quickstart feature.

Check for any leakage on fuel lines from vro pump to carb inlets after pumping up the primer bulb. Also insure that the primer bulb will pump up completely firm before starting to insure that carb bowls are full.

I did have the fast idle lever in the forward position so it would not die after it started. Is that what released all the gas? The primer bulb gets and stays hard after the first few intital pumps prior to starting. When I had my hand over the ports, isn't that the same as choking the motor?

If all is working well with the quickstart system on your engine, there should be no need to fast idle the engine at cold startup. That engine cold starts with the use of a fuel priming system and not a conventional choke flap. The throttle flaps when closed(controls in neutral) still allow enough air to enter intake chamber to provide combustion at startup. If you had the fast idle engaged ,you simply closed it back down by covering the carb ports with your hand.
