I am selling my ski boat and buying a 22 ft trophy with an inboard out board and a kicker. Kicker is a 20 hp johnson. IO is a aq125a what are the reviews of these. Looks like a simple 4 cyl engine. How are the out drives ? This boat is about 4000 lbs it would seemt his little 4 bang would be way under powered?
All that aside how are these drive trains?

There is room for a 350 in the compartment is this system upgradeable if I were to buy a donor boat or change the drive ratios? Attached are some photos even if i put a 350 in it would it plane?
Thanks in advance I have always loved these trophys and am stoked please give any and candid reviews.

Re: trophy w/ aq125a questions

I've owned two older Volvo Penta's.

The one you're looking at is very common 4 cyl setup. I agree it is underpoowered. I think if you really like the boat, take a test ride and see how it performs.

If you decide to repower, you'll have to replace the whole drivetrain from a doner boat. I beleive the Volvo Drives are well built. However, as you know, any 20 year old motor/drive is going to have needed regular mainenence to be in good shape.

Maintenence parts are generally higher. If you want to save money there, buy a canoe.:)

Regarding the manuals, Don S has them. Thanks again Don!

I guess if I was buying a boat, unless I was looking for a project, I would get something with a usable engine.

One other thing, Volvo stopped Making the 125's in 1985. May want to look int0 that a bit.

Lastly, if your used to power trim (Alpha Gen 2), the volvo will not have it, very rare to find the power trim models.

Let us know if you test it out.

Re: trophy w/ aq125a questions

The unit does have a tilt trim system. I am starting to think that it is not a 125 as this is the original owner. The boat will go about 25-30 right now. I think I am going to buy it. And get a donor boat and repower. What outdrive options would I need to look for to upgrade to av8?
