Does anyone out there have any experience trolling with a 150hp Johnson Fast Strike Motor? or something similar-- mine runs wonderfull at all speeds but can not idle and troll for more than a half hour without loading up and stalling. any ideas?? any help would be appreciated.

I don't know why your engine stalls out after a half hour while trolling, but I do know you'll have to change you plugs a lot more frequently than you normally would if your trolling with the 150. Also, ensure you run carbon cleaner through your engine several times a year vice the once a year recommendation if you're doing a lot of trolling. Hope this helps.

I've never encountered a large displacement two stroke to slow troll at idle speed without loading up. And like Mitch says...you best get used to replacing your plugs and decarbonizing often if you do much of this. High h.p. four stroke outboards are less likely to foul than comperable two strokes, but I'd suspect even they tend to load up after awhile.

Unless you are pushing a very large boat, or toss out a very large sea anchor while trolling...anything to operate your engine at or above 1000 rpm...it's gonna load up. Guess that's what kickers are made for...

Walt

although I've never used one, the hinged flap that pivots in behind the prop is quite popular here. Looks goofy, but I hear they work. Others simply pull a 5 gallon pail behind. Would be nice to have a 2 speed gear-box eh!

I'm not sure about a Johnson, but my 175 Merc will troll all day long at 2.6-3.5 kts.(750-1000 rpm) and never miss a beat. Every once and a while it'll run rich for a few minutes but then it would stop. I finally solved the mystery when I noticed the #1 carb needle valve was hanging up now and then. Other than that, no problems. I've used nothing but Merc Premium Plus since day one and have never had a problem with carbon or fouled plugs.

Ahoy, Robtness,

In 1983-4 I had a BW 18 Outrage with an '82 Johnny 150 V6. I used to troll for hours at 750-900 rpm without ill effect that I recall. If It had loaded up, I would have simply popped the neutral throttle lock-out and revved her to 2500-3000 for a few seconds to clear her up. I don't recall haveing to do that, but it has been nearly 20 years and my memory isn't perfect.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

You don't say what speed you troll at. Two strokes don't like idling long and you may be better advised to utilise a large auxilliary motor or switch to a four stroke which will idle better. I'm told some of the new two strokes do have special equipment to allow slow motor use without the carbon deposits forming.
Ross
