I have a 16ft smokercraft alaskan aluminum. I used to have a 25hp Mercury 2 stroke, and I installed a happy troller plate.
It trolled OK, with the usual vibratory smoky 2 stroke deal, plus I modified the plate for a 45degree position...This allowed trolling at higher rpm.

Anyway, I want to us a 40 hp 4 stroke with this same modified plate for trolling.

Anybody try this on a similar boat ? Bad idea ? Is the 40 just too much.

Re: Trolling with a 40hp 4 stroke

Went through the same decision 2-1/2 yrs ago. I have a 16 foot alum deep v Sea Nymph. I bought a 50hp Etec and can troll at just over 1 mph all day. It's a two stroke but you would never know it. No smoke, slight vibration at 600rpm but not bad, no adding oil to fuel. I leave the kicker at home now. I've been very pleased.
btw I don't use a trolling plate.

I have a custom built 13foot alumiinum runabout with a 40hp merc 4 stroke carb motor, trolled 12 hours last weekend and used 8 litres of fuel...a while back I had a 15ft custom alum runabout with a 40hp Merc magnum trolled all day and used 70 litres.
