Re: trolling plug

Some of the newer ones like Minnkota with i-Pilot need to be unplugged when not being used as they will drain the battery(s).

Re: trolling plug

Come on folks - there is a better reason than that. How about the gazillion of us that prefer to mount the motor on a quick release plate for travel and security. How handy would that be if we had to UN-hardwire the darned troller whenever we wanted to remove it. But electrically, it doesn't matter. If you want to hard wire it - have at it..

Re: trolling plug

im just getting tired of the cord in the way and would like to recess the pedal in the deck where it will be secured. never heard of anyone removing a trolling motor for travel or security but that makes sense.

Re: trolling plug

I had my old boat's TM hard wired, nothing wrong with it, (if it's not going to drain the batteries). On my new boat I have it plugged so the kids don't accidentally bump the pedal while getting in-out of the boat, don't need any shredded kids. The socket is a Marinco 12/24, so I can plug a parallel jumpered 12V "charging plug" in while not using the 24V TM, to charge the batterys off the main engine. (Creative wiring...)

Re: trolling plug

i open the breaker when the boats in the yard so that fixs most of the problems with hard wiring. as for theft im thinking along the lines that its just as hard to steal one that is bolted to the boat where you have to put your hand inside to get the nut off so if they realy want it then nothing will stop them.

I've been told that the newwer digital motors should be unplugged especially while baterries arre being recharged. An electrical surge or lightning will fry motor if connected while charger connected

I can't actually call that BS because it could happen. If it did, the trolling motor would be the least of your problems.

Re: trolling plug

The correct term is convienence outlet. Silvertip is correct, that is what the outlet on the boat is.

I agree. If I was to worry I'd be more worried about the electronics in the outboard.

Re: trolling plug

i like the cleaner look of the cable going under the deck as my tackle box no longer has to sit on the cable and the pedal mounted so it stops moving around as im steering

Re: trolling plug

gpop, I agree it is a much cleaner look. The in deck mount used to be the only way to go for the cable drive motors. The slickest one is the new wireless remote pedals if you fish from a pedestal or butt seat. I'm all over the boat so I use a wireless hand held remote.

*cough* yep ive seen the price on the remote and im way to poor so until the kids quit bleeding me dry the remote is going to be the wife poking me with the tip the fishing rod followed by pointing to where she wants to go.
