I have a chance to buy a 24 volt 67 lb thrust trolling motor reasonable. Reading about marine batteries will a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery do the job or will it hurt the motor. It would be a little extra for a pontoon in case something would happen to 40 hp evinrude

No. One 12 volt battery will not work for that motor. You need 24 volts. You need two 12 volt batteries wired in series or one 24 volt battery. If you wire in series make sure both batteries have the same amp hour rating. I suggest 100AH.

Also, depending on the size of your pontoon and where you are boating, 67lb of thrust may or may not be enough. How much wind do you get? Current? Are you boating in a Lake or river?

There are all kinds of charts out there that look at the weight and the length of your vessel, but here is one of the easiest ones to check out ...
