Hello all, I own a 99 motorguide foot controlled trolling motor 42lbs thrust it has a 5 speed selector wheel. My problem is it shuts off on #4 and #5 speeds if i let off for a second it will work briefly and then kick off again. I was just wondering if anyone could help or if anyone has had a similar problem. Thanks in advance.

Re: Trolling motor

I believe your motor is tripping an internal automatic breaker switch. Any of a number of things could be causing it. Have you used this motor in salt water? Some of your motor windings could be shorted. You need to check the amperage draw on this motor. It should be drawing about 45 amps and absolutely no more than 50 at full speed. Amp meters can be had at Radio Shack. You don't want the typical multitester that they sell as these only measure milliamps. Get an ammeter that can handle at least 75 to 100 amps. Hope this helps. :)
