I have a 14 ft trihull that I am trying to push around the flats with a 30# minkota transom mount trolling motor. The motor will push the boat but only if I run it wide open and if the wind or tide is moving just a little bit I have no control at all. My question is how big of a trolling motor do I need for my boat. I dont have any pics but its a strait up 14 ft trihull, no topcap or console or anything just a 15 hp outboard on an empty hull.

Re: trolling motor ?

try a 55lb riptide. the previous owner had one on my boat and it pushed it around good. my boat's a 14' trihull with 50hp four seats, two batteries, and 9 gallons of gas on board, also a 15lb anchor. it's a side console setup too so. i would be surprised if it didn't get you going pretty fast at wot.

Yeah my brother in law has one of those on his pathfinder. Im not realy looking to go that fast or spend that much. If I could find a good deal on a used one though I would go for it.

Can you rotate head and move it to the bow? When I had a 14' aluminum boat with trolling motor it seemed that it was easier to pull boat through water than push it. It might have just been my perception/imagination, too.

Oops...just noticed you said tri-hull...assume its a heavier fiberglass boat? 30lbs might be a but light duty for that.

Re: trolling motor ?

I can rotate the head,I havnt thought about that. It might work, the problem I have is the wind or the tide just pushes the front of the boat wherever it wants so moving it to the front and pulling the boat I imagine the rear can drift where it wants and I could still control it.Thanks blifsey, Ill try it this weakend. I hate having to fight the wifey about spending more money on my boat. ( of course its okay to spend money on her boat though) haha

A little wind can definitely make it dicey. My 70 lb struggles when the wind cranks up a bit. And I have less freeboard than your tri-hull - ie, less wind resistance. I'd see if you can pick up a stronger motor. Keep an eye on craigslist, there seem to be quite a few of them for sale recently.

I have a 14 foot trihull and a 30# TR, turned the head around and mount it to the front/side of the boat. Moves and controls it just fine. I can actually leave a small wake when in high 'gear'.

I had a Tuffy 14ft tri-Hull and had a bow mount 55lb old johnson 24v system and it scooted. In high it would lunge the boat forward if you tapped the throttle.
