I'm just wondering what would be an adequate size trolling motor or kicker if you will for a Bayliner 21 Trophy. I'ver heard anything from a 5 hp to a 15 hp. This would be just for limping in to marina in case of breakdown.

Re: trolling motor size

i've got a 21' trophy as well. I just bought an 8 horse nissan. this works just fine for trolling, and an emergency motor. the motor moves my boat at a whopping 7 mph gps. the motor size you need will depend on how far away from the marina you typically are. a 15 horse is pretty heavy so think about that when making your decision. 2 strokes are lighter so you could get more horespower for the weight.

lingcod

Thanks for the info. 7 mph is all I would need.
I would only be no more than 9 or 10 miles from marina at the most. Usually only a few miles.

Re: trolling motor size

Is it true that in a situation like this 7 mph could be the "hull speed", the max. that *any* kicker would push it - unless the kicker was actually big enough to put it on plane? In other words, this 8 hp could be as fast as maybe even a 30 (or more) hp, if the 30 (or more) couldn't actually get it up on plane?

FWIW, My friend has a 15 kicker on his 24 ft. Bayliner Classic, but he also uses it for his dingy motor - and on the dingy, he can actually get more speed with a 15 than with an 8 or 10.

Re: trolling motor size

hey D you could be right. my old kicker that was stolen last month was a 1979 evinrude 6hp. it would push the boat at 6 mph. the new motor is a 2005 nissan 8hp 4 stroke. 26 year differnce in age 2 horse difference in power 1 mph difference. all i know is that if you are gonna be 10 miles away from a marina make sure both motors are kept in good working order.

lingcod
