I am using a w55 motorguide wireless trolling motor. i tried to extend the battery hookup 3 feet with 8 guage wire and it was turning itself off within a min of useing it and i would have to disconnect the battery to start again. i took off the extention and it seems alot better. It still shuts off when going through very thick weeds. any ideas what could cause this ? its less then a year old out of the box

Re: Trolling Motor shuts down ???

The circuit breaker is tripping due to the current load. What size is it? Should be a 60 amp unit and placed in the positive lead within six inches of the battery. Does this happen at all speeds or just high speed? Disconnecting the battery should have nothing to do with the problem. The circuit breaker opens due to heat and as it cools it resets automatically (unless you have a manual reset type). If you don't have a circuit breaker then there is a problem in the motor itself.

Hi trihull,
I don't know if this is your problem but my 55 had an extra plug so you could use a foot pedal or the wireless. If you leave the plug cover on it and water gets into it the pins conduct enough to turn controll over to the foot pedal that isn't there. I run weeds all the time and don't trip a 50 amp breaker. I spent almost 5 days mad at Minn Kota after a new wireless install on an older motor. I hope this helps you.

Re: Trolling Motor shuts down ???

MG Wireless do have some sort of built-in protection. If it faults, it does require removing power and reconnecting to reset the logic. First, check to make sure it is not the breaker that ST suggests, then check for fishing line wrapped around prop shaft. I have only activated that logic with a ground/log impact or wrapped in heavy thick weeds. In water clear of obstructions, it should not be tripping.

Now, I have had a couple of instances where I lost turning in one direction or other. Same thing, a power off/on reset cleared it. These seem to go away once I changed some other wiring, so suspect noise caused it.

PS: No footpedel plugs on MG wireless. Foot pedel is wireless along with keyfobs.
