Trolling motor running in reverse

I have a minn kota 12v 40lb troll motor. I don't leave it on the boat when not in use. I bought the boat three years ago and I would say the trolling motor was 1 -2 yrs old at that time. This past weekend got on the water and it appears to be running in backwards. reverse goes forward, fwd moves you backwards. The only thing I have ever done to it was spin the head 180. but i did that when I bought it. And it ran as should. So I spun the head back to its original position and no change. battery hooked up correctly. I searched this topic and found many possibilities. Is this a fluke thing for minn kota 40lb to just start running backwards? I don't even know where to start asking questions.

Did you try reversing the wires.

Since this is apparently a motor that didn't get used much, did you forget that when the motor is operating that the prop needs to "push" and in order to do that it must always point to the rear (the "bullet" faces forward). If you spun the head you obviously changed this from a stern mount to a bow mount so you could reach the tiller. If you point the propeller forward whether mounted on the stern or the bow it would give you the impression it is running backwards even though forward is selected.

Seriously, by definition the motor is not hooked up correctly. Red wire to positive on the battery, black to the negative.
