Trolling Motor reverse head question

I mounted my trolling motor to the front and turned the handle around the problem I have is I have to use it in the reverse speeds to go forward. I rotated the head the other way and the forward speed moves me forward but much much slower than the reverse speed. What is my problem?

Welcome to iboats, I am lost, you have a trolling motor with reverse?

Most of them I have seen have several forward speeds and just spin 360, what kind of trolling motor is this, brand and power

Which way is the prop pointing?. It must face the rear of rhe boat, not foward. Props do not operate with the sane efficiecy going in reverse. Just look at the blades to see why.

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

If you have the head reversed, you should be using the forward speeds to move forward. It sounds like you have the battery leads reversed.

Re: Trolling Motor reverse head question

It is a minn kota endurance 2 30 lb thrust 5 forward speeds and 3 reverse

I rotated the top part the steering bar and put it on the front and it goes forward in the water when I engage it in reverse

so I rotated the bottom part and when I engage it in forward it does not go forward as fast as it was in reverse.

Re: Trolling Motor reverse head question

i have to go with nybo and ask if you have the leads the wrong way around. set the trolling motor like silvertips says so the prop is towards the rear of the boat then when you select forwards it should go forwards with the head turned

In the process of turning the head section around on the shaft did you disconnect any wires from any switches? And the same question for turning the bottom section around, which to me you would now have it exactly like you started out with. There is only one way for your trolling motor to work in a reverse condition. Either you have the battery wires reversed like NYBo suggested, OR you removed some wires internally and misplaced them back on the terminals incorrectly. Rethink what you've done and see if you have everything correctly connected up, that being positive to positive and negative to negative. Other than those conditions, I see no other way to have those reverse issues... Take some close pictures of how your internal wires are connected after you made your changes and the battery connections as well. Maybe we can see the problem with pictures...JMHO!

You haven't answered any of the questions. Why rewire at this point. You either have red on the positive post and black on negative or you don't.

Re: Trolling Motor reverse head question

I used wire to extend the trolling motor wires and all I had on hand was red hence the reply of me saying I was going to re-wire it with the correct colored wire. Checked everything else and it was pointing in the right direction it should so it has to be the wires.

I knew something had to be changed. There is no other way to make your trolling motor run in a reverse direction by simply turning the head unit 180 degrees to mount on the bow... The electrons didn’t know the head unit was turned...
Get some black wire (of the correct gauge) and change the red one that you attached to the initial black wire. Or at least mark the end so you or anybody else will know where it truly goes. And IF you attached longer wires to your trolling motor to reach your battery in the back of the boat, make sure you use the correct gauge extension wire to support the amps that you will draw from the battery. The new length could get hot if it is under sized. So while using it, touch the extensions you installed and see if they are warm or hot. That is a signal that you need larger size wire now.

Get a continuity tester and some black tape to color code the wires. Much cheaper than than replacing that heavy wire.

Re: Trolling Motor reverse head question

Ok I rewired it and it now goes forward in forward BUT check this out when the wires were wrong and i had to use reverse to go forward
the battery lasted around 4 hours now corrected it lasted about 1.5 hrs why such the difference?
If it lasted longer the other way why not switch it back?

Re: Trolling Motor reverse head question

Is this motor new to you or have you had it on other boats before? How big is the battery? How big is the motor? How big is the boat? We already discussed the motor running in reverse. The prop is very inefficient in reverse so there was no load on it compared to operating forward. Hence partially better run time. Was the battery fully charged? Has the battery been load tested to make sure it can "hold" a charge.

The trolling motor is a Minn Kota endurance c2 30 lb thrust Brand new. The battery is a group 27 new. The boat lol if you want to call it a boat is a expandacraft kinda catamaran that breaks down in 4 ft sections and fits in the back of my pick up in pieces. I will post a pic at the bottom. Designed by Expandacraft, Inc. . Like I said when the wires were wrong and the motor is on the front in reverse the boat would really cruise fast and battery lasted 4 hrs it was twice as fast as it is now corrected.
