ok i'm looking to by one by next spring. At the moment we have a weeres 20' pontoon. i think the pontoons measure 24" and what i want to do is buy a aluminum flatbottom in a year or so. I'd like to purchase a Minn Kota Autopilot or something similar to use for now with the pontoon and then use it with the boat i plan to buy, something similar to a tracker grizzly 17'or 18'. what shaft length should i go with? 48" 54"

Without knowing the heigth of the boat's deck from the waterline it's hard to say. If you fish in deep water a 54" would not hurt and even if you went in the shallows you could still raise the shaft on the bracket. It might get in the way though depending on how you cast. We have a 48" on our 18' SeaArk and it's more than enough ant it's a tall boat. If you have access to these boats, measure from the deck to the waterline (best guess) and add about 14-18" to submerge the powerhead enough to prevent cavitation. That should give you a rough idea of the shaft you'll need.

spots

Call Minn Kota on the 800#. Tell them all your plans and winds and currents. They will pick the right size every time. They know every combo possibilty.

I would go with the MINN MAXXXXUM 55lb or 74lb over the autopilot unless the auto has the maxxum in it.
