Re: trolling motor recomendation for 20' pontoon?

I also have a 20'pontoon. I'm no expert, but this has been my experience. I have a 35# transom mount that I attach to the front of the pontoon and also use on the transom of a 16 foot flat bottom. The motor pulls the pontoon with less resistance than it pushes the 16 foot, but turning it requires more power. I guess the pontoons have greater resistance when turning. I just swapped out a 50# PD from my bass boat to a 70# PD. My plan is to put the 50 on the pontoon boat. I suspect I will have plenty of power. We have several lakes in our area that are electric motors only. Most of the pontoons in our size have dual units on the transom. Folks tend to load the pontoons up with many people and cruise the lake. I suspect this is the reason for the added unit. Sorry if I was not much help.

40-50# would be more than adequate for your toon. I run mine with a little 30lb motor for fishin' shorelines and coves and it does just fine on the lake. Occasionally, I wish I had more power when the wind kicks up, but for just positioning the boat, it works fine. When I actually troll, I use the main motor...
