trolling motor out of sync

I have a 20 year old Tracker Bass Boat with a Tracker Pro Series Motorguide 30lb thrust trolling motor. Recently I noticed the directional pointer was not in sync with the actual direction of the boat.....it worstened until it seemed that the foot pedal was slipping and not turning the prop. I was able to turn the bottom of the shaft with my hand while the pointer did not turn, so I turned it until it tightened up. The shaft seemed to have just un-screwed itself. It appears to operate ok now, except the foot pedal and directional pointer are out of sync with the prop. How do I adjust those so that the foot pedal is flat and the pointer is correct while going straight? This is not one of those new wireless kinds. Thanks for any responses.

Re: trolling motor out of sync

If its like the newer ones, just take off the top cap and should have some splines under the pointer, move it to a new place and reinstall it.
