Have an 12/24 vole trolling motor. Have a 4 way plug for hook up. have two 12 volt batteries hooked in series. Two red wires and two black wires go from batteries in back of boat to front hook up, as stated 4 prong receptacle. Trolling motor has 12/24 volt switch. Do I hook up with 4 wires to pedal or 3 wires, one red one black one white. Just how does this installation work. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Trolling Motor hook up

You have a four terminal receptacle because you have four wires running from the batteries. You DO NOT hook the batteries in series. The 12/24 selector switch on the foot pedal is what makes the 12 volt or 24 volt connection. If you leave the batteries wired in series that switch cannot function properly and will likely make smoke and fire. You need to tell us the number of wires and colors on the cable from the motor itself. You obviously need a four terminal plug to mate with the four terminal receptacle. You also need to verify that someone hasn't mucked with the wiring going TO the receptacle. In the end, the troller PLUG wiring must match the troller RECEPTACLE wiring.
