I have a Motorguide T46 trolling motor. When I turn it on it will not run unless I spinn the propeller then it works fine. Is it worth tearing into this thing or should I replace it? Thanks

Re: Trolling motor help

Take off the prop and check the shaft for fish line. That alone can stall a troller. If you find some, chances are it has cut the shaft seal so water can made it's way inside and that can destroy the motor. What you find determines your options. If there is no fish line present, the bearings have probably tightened up and even though the motor runs, it will be consuming electricity like crazy so it will not be efficient. Only disassembly will tell you what to do. If you find a very rusty interior, I would think about a new motor.

I have already took of the prop. Didnt see any line. But I it came with the boat. I will pull the motor and see whats going on. If im correct, there should be a rear bearing?

There will be two bearings. one behind the prop and one at the bullet portion of the housing.

mikesreelrepair.com has trolling motor schematics.
crowleymarine.com has much better prices on parts.
