I wanted to use one of my mincota tolling motors as a side thruster.
I was going to remome the head and run 12 volts direct to the motor with a switch to reverse the plus and minus for forward reverse.
My question, With all the electronics in the head, is the motor really a 12 volt motor??

Yes -- the motor is 12V BUT!!!! Depends on which MinnKota you have. If it's a 12V power drive, the motor is still 12V but the electronics in the head provide for soft-start, steering and pulse operation at anything short of full speed. You can remove all of the electrics including those in the motor housing and power it directly. It will then be a full power 12V motor. If you have a non-Power Drive version, the motor has speed coils (wire wound resistors) in the motor housing for all speeds under full speed. Again, remove them, power the motor directly and go. Long answer to a short question.

I meant to add that why screw up a perfectly good Minnkota. Why not sell it and use the bucks to buy a couple of cheaper hand controlled versions. There must a ton of them laying around. The prop on a troller would not work well for reverse operation as they are biased for either pushing or pulling, but not both.
