Trolling...is it possible to troll backwards?

my problem is that my boat trolls too fast....other than buying a trolling plate is it possible to throw it in reverse and troll backwards to slow my troll?

I have a Rinker 18.5 foot with a 4.3 I/O

would this be ridiculous? would it still be too fast?

Thanks

Jeremy

Back trolling is the method of choice for walleyes in the north woods, but I don't think I ever saw an I/O doing it. It is an outboarder's technique.

I think you probably need an electric troller to get the speed (or lack of same) that you want.

I agree with JB, you should try to get an electric trolling motor if you can. For an I.O., an engine mounted trolling motor would work/look great without drilling holes in your boat, excessive back-trolling may give you a water intake problem at low rpm's.

You could try dragging drift socks if you aren't trolling in too weedy an area or running lines directly behind the boat, but I'd agree with the electric motor. They aren't cheap, but you get full control, and no waves splashing the back of the boat full of water.

I love my minnkota autopilot, copilot, wireless remote setup. Find a 55inch or longer shaft should work. On the front of boat is the best place for trolling, back trolling works in water current. My secrect weapon for fishing is my electric its quiet! I went ahead got riptide edition. I pitty the fool with the chug chug in my fishing holes

I have dragged drift socks before to slow the trolling speed and I've also used them in various places on the boat to hold it on track while trolling in the wind. I have also dropped the boat into neutral periodically to slow the overall trolling speed, but a good trolling motor is a better option than either of these.

My vote is to mount an electric trolling motor. Since I did this I can troll for hours and not make a single noise. I don't mind giving the gas comsumption a rest either with gas prices so high.

I usually drag a five gallon bucket around behind me. One bucket slows me down about a half mile an hour.

Try to find a u$ed one...they are expensive but you can also switch it to any other motor you have in the future.........or just get a wind sock...lol

Now if one of them gets smart, they turn the motor mounted trolling motor into an electrical generator to recharge the deep cell while on engine power!! :D
