Basically you're saying that the trim works up and down, but you have no closed loop feedback to show you where it is and when it has hit its limits?

I'm not a complete expert, but on most outdrives (I can only speak for my Mercruiser) there's a set of wires that need to be in tact to get a signal to the gauge (from a potentiometer) as well as a set of wires to run to the limit switches to tell the trim when to stop due to it being up or down. On my 898, these wires run from the sides of the outdrive -- out of these hinge looking devices -- back to your control panel. See my post from last may:

I also have a non functioning gauge as well as a result of a sheared wire going to the potentiometer. I can still work my trim etc, but I just don't have gauge read out. It appears that your limit switches (at least the top one) may also not be working. If you want everything to work right, you'll probably need to do some investigating in the wiring for these things (not sure how volvo does theirs). Depending on where the break in signal is, you may need a pro. It may be a simple connection that came loose or a broken set of wires like mine. If you're handy with a meter and wiring and have a general knowledge of the schematic, it may be no problem at all. In my case, the break point was behind the outdrive, which required significant removal of components. I've just learned my trim, and live with it for now as it's not causing problems.

VP does the same thing. I don't know how long they last but on a Merc there only good for about 10 years +/- before the wires degrade.

OP - looks like you smacked the underside of the swim platform a time or two. That won't be solved on the electrical side. You need to have "limiters" installed on the rams (at least I think you can do this on a VP).
