I am having a problem removing my trim unit . I have removed the clips and been driving on it with every type of thing I have . I am being careful of not mushroom the head of pin but it just don't want to move . Does it need to be pressed out ? I don't think its ever been removed before . Thanks for your input !

They can be tricky and real buggers, especially salt water motors.

You will need a quality penetrating oil, along with a heavy sized hammer and punch. As you stated, ensure that you do not mushroom the end of it, if it already is, file it down to ease its path through the bracket. Heating the bracket, causing it to expand, also helps. This may take a few days to get out, so be patient.

It should come out. Use a 1/2" drive socket of the closest diameter to drive it. Spray it with penetrating oil, both sides plus the cylinder. If that fails, heat the aluminum with a propane torch, remove the heat and it will suck in some penetrating oil. Be carful not to catch fire.....

Has it moved at all in either direction?

You need a BFH and a method of holding an extended heavy duty drift pin. More than likely you will need to heat the surrounding metal to get it started moving.
I used a 3-4 pound mallet and a Map gas new type torch. The old style propane torch will not heat the metal fast enough.
Once you get it heated, you really have to wack the drift pin. Nothing gentle will get that thing moving. I used penetrant when removing the pin, but doubted it had an effect. Heat and very hard hits on the drift pin did.
I used a large set of vise grips to hold the drift pin. I assume you drilled into the pin to prevent mushrooming?

Good luck with it, keep posting for moral support. Your doing one of the most difficult projects.

If all else fail get a bigger hammer!;)

Man,i'm glad mine pushed out with my finger when i changed my trim unit.
I put the new one in after a thick coating of Triple Guard grease just in case it ever has to come back apart.
Good luck with it!

JJB - A BFH is a Big Hammer, the "F" is an expletive, modifing word.

I do not understand the drilling part. Use a 1/2 drive socket as a drift, if you do not have a brass drift of the correct size. Sounds like it is time for the heat.

Enough heat will break the bond as the pin expands and contracts. Then you can drive it out.

Drilling won't get you anywhere as far as I know. The pin will mushroom if you keep hitting it long enough.

I would consider contacting a machinist.

Sorry wasn't keepin up. The drilling of the hole is so you have a location to place the drift pin while you whack it. This also prevents mushrooming the pin. I have done two of these, I thought the first would beat me, took me two weekends

Glad to hear you got it!
