I have a 1975 90hp mercery and tilt was working but would slowly drop back down. Then got out of water and it stopped. All I get is a click. lve read top up fluid or bypass solenoid. How do i bypass and when bypassed do I hit the tilt button or will trim move once bypassed? ? Is there a switch or fuse that might need to be reset

I don't think the solenoid will help you. These engines have three solenoids on the left of the engine. The solenoids trigger the electric pump the pump the hydronic fluid and lift the engine. From what you are saying the pump is working fine. If the engine is lowering the hydronic fluid must be leaking. If you can see hydronic oil on the ram or around any joints or hoses this is the cause. If there is no leak the oil is returning through the none return valve back into the system. I can't help with we're the valve is, the engine is old for trim and tilt and it cold possibly be an after market addon. Regards

Spurs, Your motor will have one or two solenoids, likely one, just for trim and tilt up. You should also have a trim limit switch mounted on the starboard trim bracket. Those break all the time. If you do not see hydraulic fluid (either 5W-30 motor oil or ATF) dripping, chances are the Teflon piston seal in one of the cylinders is leaking, causing the motor to lower.

If you have the three pushbutton PTT control panel, push the middle and top buttons together, and the motor should tilt. If not, you have some sort of wiring or electrical issue. You cannot bypass the solenoid on that model, except to tilt it up, on land. In the water, under power, the solenoid is necessary to provide the necessary current to trim up.

You can use with no trim. Loosen the reverse lock (knurled knob on control valve under PTT Pump/reservoir) to allow manual tilt up.

If only a click with a new solenoid, it is likely you have a bad connection or a bad PTT motor. There is a bi-metal breaker inside the PTT motor. Sometimes these get some dirt between the points, causing an open circuit in the starter motor.

So the ptt is that where the 3pronges go into or is the actual motor where the Solenoid is attached .

Can I get rid of my harness and bypass by connecting the wirew the same way to the solenoid minus that harness. Harness looks like it just serves as a spot to comnect

The three pronged harness is for +12VDC (red wire), Up Trim (Blue wire) and down circuit (green wire). If the blue wire is broken, the solenoid sill not click and the motor will not turn. If the green wire is broken, the motor will not turn (single solenoid) and if the red wire is broken, nothing will happen. You can bypass the 3 prong connector. It simply serves as a quick disconnect. Alternatively, Male crimp on spade terminals replace the originals.
