Trim/tilt pump questions

I just got a 1975 Sea Ray 190 with a merc 260 and 888 outdrive. It has been sitting for a while I can only assume it has been about 8 years because the registration decal says 2000.

I have several problems that I am curently trying to fix but this post is to address the problem I am having with my trim/tilt pump. It does not work and I was told I need to get a new pump. The first picture is the pump that is actually in it and the second picture is of the replacement pump that i was given. I was told that it works great and it should fit my boat.

Now to my question. Is it hard to replace? I consider myself to be mechanically inclined but I am not really sure about this pump.

Re: Trim/tilt pump questions

Looks like the right pump to me, the pump is mounted to the bracket on the back side with 2 bolts and the bracket is screwed to the floor of the boat.

Disconnect 2 hoses, Pos and Neg cables 3 wire harness trim limit switch wires (2 bullet connectors) and unscrew bracket from the floor.

I would bench test the replacement pump before you put it in the boat.

2 wires coming out of pump motor Blue wire is the trim up circuit Green wire is the trim down circuit, solenoid is for the trim up circuit only.

Re: Trim/tilt pump questions

I replaced the pump this morning. Everything seems to work right except I can't get the drive to come down. It went up fine and it makes noise when I press the button it just wont go down. Any suggestions?

Try adding alittle more oil to the pump sounds like it might not have enough to make it go down. DO NOT OVER FILL!!
Full is just bellow the threads of the fill plug with the dirve in the full DOWN position.

When you ran it up did the pump motor labor (slow down) when it got to the top? or did it speed up? If it sped up you need more oil to get the air out of the system.

If it still won't go down have some one stand on the drive while you run the pump with the down button.

Also make sure the vent screw is open at least 1 turn. (it's the small screw to the left of the oil fill plug as you face the pump.

Re: Trim/tilt pump questions

I'll check the oil level and then add some more to it. I don't know if it matters but I couldn't find 20wt oil but I did find some stuff that was made for tilt and trim motors. So i added that.

I don't remember exactly but I want to say it sped up a little bit towards the end. I am not 100% sure though.

I will check everything and let you know how it goes tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the help!!

tilt trim oil or W30 oil is fine for the trim pump just it should be all the same not a good idea to mix differant fluids. I think even trans fluid would be ok in the trim pump...Ive bene using the new green trim lube myself wich is also power stearing fluid.

The new tilt trim oil is green like the gear lube but not the same stuff. All of Mercs lubs are now green blue kind cool......

Thanks for the help but what would happen if I mixed them? I filled the new pump with trim/tilt fluid which was clear and when I disconnected the lines the oil looked kind of like motor oil. There couldn't have been much of the motor oil colered stuff because the drive was up when i changed out the pump and after i put it down when i filled the pump. So whatever was in there was just in the lines and the rams.

Mine is doing the same thing after changeing the valve body on the pump also wont stay up under power. I am thinking I got a bad vavle body but now you have me questioning that. How do you go about bleeding it so I know there is no air left in the system? thanks in advance.

Re: Trim/tilt pump questions

did you ever get asolution to this?

No unfortunatly I haven't. I cut a tendon in my left hand so I have been without a hand for a while. If you get the problem solved let me know. I have been told that it is pretty easy to bleed the lines. Also I was talking to a friend and he suggested the switch could be bad. Which in my case is entirely possible due to all the wires that are in my boat from when the engine was replaced.

Re: Trim/tilt pump questions

I'm still looking for help on this subject. As of now I can get the drive to move only when pressing the trailer button. Other than that it will not go up or down. I have attached a picture of the switch I have if it helps. Does anyone know whats going on?

Ayuh,....

Right Here,.. Is the manual for that motor,+ drive,....
It'll show you where the Power comes from,+ where it goes to....
Get yourself a Test Light,+ a Multi-meter....

The manual is a BIG file,....
Right click it,+ "Save As"...
I hear it's better than just downloading it,+ Then saving it to documents...
