Im new to the trim and tilt on the motors, on the tank that holes the oil it says [[ use only sae-5W-20 or 5W-30 motor oil ]] if this is an hydraulic unit, why does it not use hydraulic oil, and what weight do most use

jim

I agree with you.... That does sound wierd. I always use transmission fluid in my mercury's. Tranny fluid is usually 30w but Motor Oil????.

Mine uses motor oil. Says so no the unit, in the owners manual, the shop manual, and the Clymer's manual. 1995 70 hp Force

If there is oil in it, continue with oil. If tranny/tilt fluid, continue with that.
I don't think you want to mix the two.

My 1981 with an exterior pump uses 10w30.

I asked a mechanic at work that works on hydraulics about this. He said that 10w30 is fine for hydraulics on something like Power T/T since it runs intermittent and does not get very hot.

Hydraulic fluid has additives in it to handle the heat better.

I agree, I would go with what it calls for and not mix it.

It's all slippery!!!!

Rick
