i have a 1992 johnson 90hp and from time to time...very random the motor will trim up on its own. i can trim it down and it will go, but as soon as i let off the switch it pops right back up again. ive replace both trim/tilt buttons on the gearshift and motor. what could this be??

The same thing happened on my '94 OMC 200. Look inside the control handle where the wires for the thumb switch run into the control box. Mine got frayed and would short out on the metal handle causing all kinds of unusual behavior.

If there is no short in the handle look into replacing the tilt trim relays located on the side of the engine most of the time on port side next to starter. A bad contact in the relay will cause the same probs.
