trim/tilt glitchy

hey guys, looking at buying a boat, but the hydraulic trim/tilt only works if we push the motor at a certain angle. seems to be electrical. you think this is a big repair? will it cost be a lot to get repaired? my first boat so i dont wanna buy something that i already need to put big bucks into.

it's an etec so its not like its really old either

nothing. all i know is its about 4-5 years old, and a 50 hp etec. it works from time to time and sometimes it will just stop mid-movement. we jiggle the motor around and hold it at certain positions and it starts working again.

D44boy, could be anything from a loose/bad connection to a complete replacement.
Consider it a bargaining chip worth at least $1K.

Rap the t/t motor with a small hammer and see what happens.

your symptoms are consistent a loose connection, broken wire, or short inside the cowling.

motors that are going bad tend to have intermittent failure at any random angle of lift. whenever of bit of rust debris lands on a brush contact then motor won't spin. you can gently tap the motor, get the bit of dust to shift, and the motor spins again. But the failure can be at any engine angle.

hydraulics tend to leak fluid or bleed down.
