Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

When I Trim Up As Far As I Can On My 2005 192 With 190hp Volvo, The Needle Is Only 3/4 Way To The Top Of The Trim Gauge. When I Trim All The Way Down, The Needle Is At The Bottom Of The Trim Gauge. Does Anyone Know If There Is Some Override Switch That Will Allow The Motor To Tilt Up Farther For Trailering? Or Am I At The Limit For Trimming Up The Volvo 190hp.

Also, In Hopes That It May Be Of Benefit To Someone. I Was Porpoising Pretty Badly So I Put On A Se 300 Hydrofoil. Reduced The Porpoising, Allowed Me To Trim Up More At Lower Speeds, Slightly Faster Plane Now At 2750 Vs. 2900, A Bit Better Gas Mileage, Better Grip In Truns. The Real Surprise To Me Was That My Light Load Top Gps Speed Went From Just Over 46 To 47.5 (i Had Expected The Drag From The Foil To Reduce The Top End).

I Notice A Little List To The Left When Loaded Heavy And/or Cruising Under 30, But Effect Seems Less Noticable When Lighty Loaded Or Traveling Faster Than 30.

I Would Expect That Trim Tabs Would Provide More Of A Positive Effect (especially On A Larger Boat, Or For Ocean Boating). But, For A Quick, Easy An Inexpensive Improvement, I'd Recommend The Se 300 For $59.

Re: Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

First of all, do you have an extended swim platform? When you say the trim gauge is at the bottom of the dial when the drive is down, is the needle past the lower mark on the gauge?

Re: Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

i do have an extended swim platform that i bought form a rinker dealer and installed myself. the extra 100lbs or so weight pulling down the stern changed the dynamics of the way the boat handled. one of the reasons i threw on the hydrofoil. nice to have the extra space, also protects the kids from the prop while diving off the stern.

when the trim is fully down, the needle is right on the lower mark of the guage. when the trim motor starts to whine and the drive stops raising (implying i've maxed out the travel of the trim/tilt function), the needle is at the 3/4 mark of the guage. i'm wondering if that is a built in protection against operating with the trim too far up, and that there is a tilt range override function that will raise the drive and needle to the top of the guage.

Re: Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

From the picture below, the drive is all the way up. Is yours lower than this? My gauge doesn't go all the way to the top either. Do the tilt cylinders look like they're fully extended?

Bottom line is that I think you're OK.

Re: Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

i don't have a picture to illustrate, but i would say that it looks like mine gets about as high as yours appears to be in your pic. it may be that the gauge or sender needs to be recalibrated. i did notice that some similar boats at my marina seem to be able to raise their drives higher (which would be beneficial when anchoring in the shallows at the beach).

Re: Trim/Tilt Gauge Question

A neighbour of mine has a 2000 192 with a Merc Alpha 1 drive. He has a tilt switch as well as a trailer switch on his helm control. The Merc drive goes way up when using the trailer button. He does not have an extended swim platform.

You will notice very little clearance between the top of the outdrive and the bottom of the swim platform.

I do have to be careful when driving onto roads from higher parking lots and also have to scope out launching ramps at launch time just to be on the safe side.

I find it more beneficial to know where the drive is positioned when running thereby allowing me to trim accordingly as opposed to having the gauge show full up when trailered. I know when it's full up by pump sound.
