I have a 1992 seaswirl with an omc cobra outdrive and the trim/tilt gauge needed to be adjusted so I read in the manual how to do it. unfortunately the one bolt head on the sending unit broke so I had to remove the sending unit to remove the broke bolt. I reinstalled the sending unit. now it just reads one position and it is wrong of course. my question is this the sending unit is mechanical and has a lever on the back of it. is there a special way that the lever needs to be installed in the back of the gimble housing??? or has anyone ever done this. I went to the local boat mechanic he had no idea. so if anyone has had experience in doing this please any information would be appreciated .. thank you

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

Yeah. you might need a different boat "mechanic"......A lot of them don't want to touch a Cobra.

The trim sender is simply a variable resistor that is connected from the negative lead on the gage to ground.

A voltage is applied to the "+" side of the gage. The NEG side of the gage is sent to one side of the sender (resistor) and other side goes to ground.

The sender simply varies the amount of current allowed to flow through the gage (based on it's radial position)

If you have a poor connection anyplace in the circuit, it won't work (incl ground connections) .

Here's the OEM manual. there's a pretty good description for adjustment
http://boatinfo.no/lib/omc/manuals/1986-1998omcmanual.html#/576

Before you install it, have a helper observe the gage while you (manually) run the sender through it's range to verify operation.

If you need a new sending unit (they don't last that long) Sierra makes an aftermarket version that works fine. The sender is easy to replace but the wiring is tough to tread through the transom mount. My mechanic made a simple modification that makes it a 5 min job, drilled a hole through the side of the transom mount and run the wires up the transom like a transducer.....
