Trim/Tilt failure? Don't overlook the obvious!

My limited knowledge rarely allows me to add anything to the forum, but I thought that I might share this for future reference:

While taking my boat out of the water, my "down" Trim/Tilt stopped working. Fortunately, the "up" worked fine and I got the boat home. I first checked that the pump worked in both directions and it did. Since my boat has a remote switch on the swim platform - and neither it nor the one on the throttle lever worked - I just knew that I had a bad "down" solenoid. Wrong!. After removing and cleaning the contacts on the "down" solenoid, it occurred to me that there must be a common connection for the throttle trim and the remote trim.

On the backside of the remote switch is where the common connections are. One wire had slipped off of its connector. Once I put the wire back on the terminal, everything worked as it should. Fortunately, this occurred to me before I went out and bought a replacement solenoid switch.

BTW. Both trim solenoids and the engine mounted slave start solenoid are the same. So swapping to shake out a suspect solenoid is easy.

Great find! Also a common problem is broken wires inside the remote control. Mine has given me a few shocks over the years, I have a nice new Teleflex CH1700 but am too lazy to take off the side panel to install it. So I keep fixing the wiring with liquid electrical tape lol. I took off the panel on the other side to replace rotted wood and it was, lets say, not fun! Nasty machine screws in the wood with rusted on nuts holding them on, had to hacksaw all 5 of them off.
The old OMC control still works well for its age.
