I have a 1982 somerset with a 898 305 mercruiser. This boat has two things on the back that says step'n trim. I'm assuming these are trim tabs. they are adjustable up and down but I can't adjust them while driving the boat. What purpose do they serve? Thanks

Re: trim tabs

There are many threads around about trim-tabs, so for more info you should try the search function.

Anyway, I am familiar with those and they are usually installed to correct a porpoising problem. Many boats are their fastest right before the point of porpoising, so manufacturers often set their boats up with that type of balance from the factory. If an owner either transfers weight unevenly to the stern, or battery options etc. change the originallly intended balance, they can actually porpoise at all loads and speeds and become very frustrating. Correctly setup trim-tabs (even those that are not adjustable from inside the boat) can make just enough difference to make a boat liveable.
