trim tab?

mine leans and turns to the starboard side. i know i need to turn the tab. according to the omc manual i know what way to turn it, but is there a rule of thumb on how much to turn the tab? I'm pretty sure its a trial and error thing but gust wondering if there is a rule of thumb?
