There is a piece that has gotten broken off my motor. I think its called the trim tab but not sure. Its located on the lower unit right above the prop and its shaped like a small fin. What is the purpose of this? Do they just screw in or do I have to remove the lower unit to replace it?

Re: Trim Tab?

Trim tab is dual purpose item, a zinc sacrificial anode for corrosion protection, also a trim to help offset steering torque caused by rotation of prop. Should be a bolt holding trim tab on and in position, may be under a small plastic or rubber button or cover near trim tab. You can buy one for about $15 and put it on. Mine is set with the fin pointing to the right/starboard side of motor so when I'm running on the water the steering wheel doesn't constantly "pull" in any direction. Airplanes also have trim tabs on rear vertical stabilizers for same purpose. Good Luck!
