Hi,

I have a VP DP5.7 Gi with Insta Trim Boat Leveler trim tabs. I need to refill my reservoir but nothing, including the manual and online research, tells how to do this. I know where the filler hole and plug is but its hard to access in my boat. Any thoughts on how to refill the reservoir?

Thanks in advance, Eric 22' Davis

Trim tabs are not engine related, so moving to boat topics.

If you know where the fill hole is, just use an oil can with a small hose on it, or whatever it takes to reach the fill hole. Not everything on boats is easy to get to. For that matter, it's normal to be almost impossible to get to.

If you want to work on your boat, you have to be creative.

Since it's low, I would be asking myself why. Boat leveler did have problems with hoses failing. Also check the cylinders themselves to see if they leak. Your oil has to be going somewhere.

With both Trim Tabs in the full up position check the fluid level to make sure it is at or near the fill line. It is very important to make sure the Tabs are up before you add fluid.. Here is a diagram of the system:

If you need to add fluid, use Automatic Transmission Fluid (any type). After filling, run the Trim Tabs up and down 3-4 times to purge any air from the system and recheck the level.

Don S has a good point about a possible leak. Once you check the fluid level you can check for a possible leak by putting both Trim Tabs in the full down position and leave them there overnight. The should stay in position, if one or both retract on their own, then check the system for leaks.
