Hello all and Happy New Year,

I have a 1992 19.5" stingray with a 431A Volvo Penta 290DP.

I was recently doing some corrosion prevention and inadvertently caused some problem with my trim. I had forgotten to disconnect the batt when I went to pull of the relays (had to pry it off a little with a screwdriver) back by the trim motor and got quit a spark, of course I disconnected the batt before proceeding at that point, continued on looking for and scrubbing corrosion. Then I started the boat (trim already down) and everything seemed ok. Off to the river or so I thought when I can not get the trim to go up. The relays did not appear to be corroded and everything was working great prior to this, now I have no trim but the relays seem to be clicking, I swapped them around and even tried one at a time, with just one only one clicks in only one direction either up or down, and with both on they both click like relays should? So my question is (finally) could it still be the relays or if not what? I plan on checking for power going to the trim motor with a meter and I will shoot for resistance through the trim motor (not sure what that should read on the trim motor)? Does it sound like I shorted out the motor, if so how would I know, any other ideas?

By the way, I have already changed the 5 amp fuse for the trim switch on the remote control and I tried the to move the trim with motor running and off and still nothing?

Sounds like you have blown a fuse or tripped a breaker. Check those first before going any deeper. you can disconnect the leads going directly to the trim motor and apply 12 volts independently of the wire harness just to confirm that the trim motor is working. If that doesn't find you problem you will probably need to get the proper manual with the schematic and start checking resistance in the harness and relays.

I am not sure by what you mean independently, do you mean with an external 12 volt power source, and some wires? So essentially i could run a power wire from the batt with a terminal end on it and touch it to the trim motor terminal ends and it should work right? I have a scamatic and have even scanned it but can not figure out how to post it onto this forum?

There is a fuse (White plastic with 2 studs) attached to the main terminal of the starter solenoid. It is used for the main power to the trim motor, that small 5 amp fuse is only for the control and gauge circuit.

Ok, with power applied straight to the trim motor leads it actuates, i just puled the relay connector off and touch a hot 12 v to the biggest wire end and it work, blue and green i think. So now i am going to try and find thie fuse that you are speaking of Don S, i am however getting power to my gauge. If there is a chaffed wire on the remote control would this still cause the trim on the dash not to work, and both ways at that?

Re: Trim stopped working Volvo Penta

ok i see the fuse, i think, it is right on the starter and has the two post coming out, one has end has 12 v the other does not, but i do not see how to change that fuse inside that white block? Can it be changed or do i have to replace the whole block? do i have to hold the trim botton down to get 12 volts out the other side of the fuse, that does not sound right to me but i will drag the wife out there and make her push the bottom in the mean time.

Re: Trim stopped working Volvo Penta

You change the whole thing, there is not a fuse inside it.

Ok, i jumped the fuse, and the trim works, so now the question is do i have to replace the whole block or can i just change the fuse inside it somehow.

Like I said before, you have to replace the whole thing, there is no fuse inside of it that is replaceable. That whole block IS the fuse.
The Volvo PN is 3819905

Did you say that it was a 5 amp, on the back of the fuse it has 55A just above the part number.

By the way, you guys rock, I really appreciate all the help.

You said you checked the 5 amp fuse, I only told you it was for the control system, not the pump motor. USe the number I gave you, and yes it's a 55A fuse.
