Trim Solenoid

Love this forum.... been reading for a long time during my '85 Tidecraft restore. Finally decided to sign up and post a question that could find an answer to. I have an '85 Mercury 75hp 4 cylinder. I burned out the trim "down" solenoid I am pretty sure. I am able to trim down when i swap the wires from one solenoid to the other. My question is that is there a different part for the trim "up" solenoid and the trim "down" solenoid?? I found the part on iboats, but next to it says "up". That would leave me to believe that there should be a "down" part number. Any help would.....well....help.

My engine they are the same. The difference is how they are wired up externally. Up solenoid energized terminals route battery pos and neg to the trim motor in one direction. Down solenoid operates the same but the external wires are reversed putting neg where pos was and pos where neg was thus reversing the motor and sucking the fluid out rather than pumping it into the trim cylinder.

Jake, As Mark alluded to there are two kinds of PTT motors. Mark appears to be discussing 2 wire trim motors, and if so, he should be using the term relay, versus solenoid..

Your motor looks to be a 3 wire PTT motor and as such will have two solenoids for the PTT. They show to be both the same part number of 96158T. Now you also have a starter solenoid on that motor, under the cowling. That may have a different part number.

Before you buy,try giving all connections and solenoid a good clean.Worked for me.

Thanks for the info guys. For $20, I already ordered it and should be getting it today. I am pretty sure I burned it out. Something was resting on the down switch at the bow so I'm pretty sure this should do the trick. If not, I'll be back...lol

Relay they are. Yes there is a distinction and I am at fault for not being more specific. Course part of the reason for such is what the reader understands the "switch" to be. Like on older ignition systems, the voltage spike reducer across the ignition points commonly referred to as a condenser when the "voltage condensing" device is in fact two conducting plates separated by a dielectric which is a capacitor. You say capacitor or inductor rather than condenser and coil and they give you a blank look.

Mark, You are correct that a capacitor (or Inductor for AC) and a condenser(for ignition systems) are the same thing. A solenoid is a type of relay as well. Both capacitor and relay are general names and not everyone understands that. I would recommend using the usual, expected names for these devices so as to reduce confusion.

I thought that I did the same thing a few years back but it turned out to be a corroded connector in the switch at the throttle. On my setup, the connector is very small (like the blue one in the photo).

Alright guys.... Thanks for all the info. I got the solenoid in and replaced and it worked like a champ!!!
