Trim sensor

I am sure this is a simple question. I installed new trim sensors on my Volvo DPS outdrives. Starboard is working fine but the port is not. When I turn the sensor by hand it works but once I put it in and attempt to adjust it doesn’t work at all… no movement. The old unit was pretty seized on there and I had to use a scribe to pull it out. Is the something that sits in that spot that spins the end of the sensor? Could that not be turning?

Possible the bell housing threaded pin isn't tight in the bell housing and remaining stationary when the drive tilts up/down

Remove the sender and observe the pin while the trim moves the drive up/down. The pin should rotate with the bell housing under normal operation.

The pin in the center of the mounting area for the sender threads tightly (100 lb/ft+) into and rotates with the bell housing as the trim raises/lowers the drive

The sender body mounts to the gimbal ring and remains stationary as the pin rotates the actuator arm

In your case the pin has lost torque with the bell housing and is seized to the gimbal ring so it does not rotate appropriately

Remove the pin, clean the threads and reinstall torqued to spec. Blue loctite is appropriate at installation

Good idea to inspect the other pin as well

I use a 1/2" drive 5/8" hex for removal/install. There are other methods including the use of a special tool/adapter that allows for a regular socket to be used. Heat the recessed area of the pin for a minute with a small butane torch to aid removal

The procedures for removal and installation of drive and transom components along with specifications and special tools is outlined quite well in the oem manual

You can proceed however you want but it will be much easier and safer to accomplish with the drive removed

With an oem manual tasks like this will be much more simple than relying on the internet for advice. As mentioned volvo uses pragmatic step by step explanations with pictures for service protocol outlined in the manual

Thank you so much Dubs I am launching on Tuesday so I don’t think a trim sensor is probably worth it. I might just try to tight it. See if it loose. Thank you so much.
